Scholarship Winners

Scholarship winner 2023 “I am currently having a fantastic second semester at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, where I am continuing working on German Lieder with my voice teacher Lara Nie. I performed Widmung by Schumann for my jury last semester. I was also just accepted into Garnet Singers, the selective chorus on campus. The scholarship has been very helpful and helped me remember how important staying involved in the arts and singing is to me going forward.” (Lizzie Culp)

Elizabeth Culp (Red Hook High School 2022) has quite an impressive music résumé, participating in the Red Hook High School Concert Choir and Area All State Mixed and Treble Choirs with Solo Vocals in 2019 and 2020. She found her passion for vocal performance through German Lieder and sang “Vergebliches Ständchen” by Schumann as an All State NYSSMA. She is impressed with the depth and range of emotion German art songs convey. Schubert’s “Gretchen am Spinnrade” taught her a lot about the strength and versatility of her voice. She admires Schubert’s brilliance in “Erlkönig” and “Winterreise,” and performed “Der Hirt auf dem Felsen” with some friends in April 2022. Although Elizabeth is now studying at Swarthmore College and continuing her music education there. She will also take private lessons, in order to further develop her voice and will continue to explore German Lieder.
